Today is National Coming Out Day!
Why this day?
- The date of October 11 was chosen because it was the anniversary of the 1987 National March on Washington for Lesbian and Gay Rights. NCOD was officially established in 1988.
Who founded it?
- Robert Eichberg, a psychologist and author from New Mexico, and Jean O’Leary, a gay-rights activist and politician.
Why does it matter?
- NCOD brings attention to the lack of rights and protection for the gay community, promotes open and honest living and celebrates diversity and the LGBTQ community as a whole. It has now become a global event, observed from the UK to New Zealand. Every time someone comes out to a friend or family member it makes it harder for them to vote against equal rights in the future.
